M = Angels And Goddesses

Michael is the great archangel whose name means ‘Who is as God.’

Michael is the chief angel who is the deliverer of the faithful. Michael grants miracles, fosters mercy, repentance, truth, sanctification, blessing, immortality, patience and love to mankind. Michael is protective of those who are just and good.

Michael is also known as the angel that strengthens our spirits in difficult times. Michael is a protector and helps us with our courage and our worthiness and self esteem. He helps us in our commitment and dedication to our beliefs.

It is commonly believed that Michael was the angel that Moses communicated with in the burning bush and that Michael also saved Daniel from the lion’s den. Michael is also one of the five great angels along with Gabriel, Uriel, Raphael, and Metatron who assisted in the burial of Moses.

Michael inspires truth, patience and love in the human heart. In the Roman Catholic tradition Michael is considered to be the patron angel of policemen and makes sure to guide and protect them while they guide and protect us.

Michael is known to gently lead our souls to heaven. He is chief in the order of virtues, chief of the archangels, prince of the presence, angel of repentance, righteousness, mercy, and sanctification.

In Muslim lore Michael is described as being covered with saffron hairs of which each of them contain a million faces and mouths and as many tongues which, in a millioin dialects, implore the pardon of Allah. Christians invoke Michael as St. Michael the benevolent angel of death, in the sense of deliverance and immortality and for leading the souls of the faithful into the eternal light. To the Jews, he is the viceroy of heaven.

Michael is most famous for leading God’s army of angels against Satan. Among the Dead Sea Scrolls there is a one piece of the book entitled ‘War of the Sons of Light Against the Sons of Darkness.’ Here Michael is called the Prince of Light and he leads the angels of light in battle against the legions of the angels of darkness. Michael wins this battle with God on his side.




















Medusa did not always turn everyone to stone.

Medusa is the original serpent Goddess of Female Wisdom and she is of the Libyan Amazons. She was also known as Metis in those days. Her blood was said to have the power to create life or bring on death.

Medusa was symbolized by two black swans that faced in opposite directions. Medusa was known as a full moon goddess who brought rain for the crops. In later myths she was a beautiful Gorgon Queen who guarded the Garden of the Hesperides containing the tree of golden apples in the land of the setting sun.

When Medusa was caught making love with Poseidon in Athena’s temple; Athena put a curse on her and turned her hair to snakes which caused any who glimpsed her face to turn to stone; another case of a woman cursing the other woman instead of the God.

Myth also tells of Medusa’s demise at the hands of Perseus who gave Athena Medusa’s head to wear on her shield.

L = Angels And Goddesses

Laila is the Angel of Conception. She is in charge of conception and appointed to guard the spirits at their birth.

I once read about Laila in a children’s book, don’t remember the name of it but it was written by Howard Schwartz. He stated that Laila brings the soul and the seed together and sees to it that the seed is planted in the womb. Laila serves as a midwife of souls.

While the infant grows in the womb, Laila places a lighted candle at the head of the unborn infant so that it can see from one end of the world to the other. Laila also teaches the unborn child the entire Torah as well as the history of its soul.

It is believed that when the person is ready to take leave of this world that Laila will lead it from this world to the next.




















Lady of Beasts is the Goddess who is surrounded by members of the animal kingdom. This Goddess’ main role is supporting life on earth. Lady of Beasts shows her kinship with animal totems as a driving force for fertility in the natural world and she is able to assume animal form.

Once upon a time the Lady of Beasts did not have to disappear; at one time she was valued in the feminine as the bountiful Earth Goddess. Around 700 BC the continental Celts began to move into the British Isles bringing with them a culture which valued the more masculine attributes of war, kingship, and heroic exploits. Even though there were still powerful goddesses around, they were becoming subordinate to the gods.

Lady of the Beasts was seen as a threat to the Christian brothers and was eventually downplayed to the point of being a fairy.

K = Angels And Goddesses

Kakabel is the Angel of the Stars and rules over the constellations. He is also known as the Star of God.

Kakabel is a powerful angel and is considered by some to be a holy angel and by others to be a fallen angel. Whether in Heaven or Hell he commands 365,000 spirits and is instrumental in astrology.




















Kuan-Yin (also known as Quan Yin in Vietnam; Kannon in Japan, and Kanin in Bali) is special to me because she is special to my darling muse Allegra.

Kuan-Yin is the Chinese Goddess of Compassion and her name means ‘She who hears the weeping world.’ Even after enlightenment Kuan-Yin was willing to keep her human form because of her deep concern for human life. She has never turned away from anyone’s cries, no matter how often she has been asked for mercy and wisdom.

Kuan-Yin encourages her followers to exercise compassion toward all beings and to live non-violent lives. Kuan-Yin is one of the most beloved deities in the Buddhist tradition. She is the embodiment of compassionate loving kindness. As the Bodhisattva of Compassion, she hears the cries of all.

Kuan-Yin is often represented as a many armed figure, with each hand either containing a different cosmic symbol or expressing a specific ritual position or mudra. This characterizes the Goddess as the source and sustenance of all things. When Kuan-Yin’s hands are cupped it is symbolizing the womb as the door for entry to this world through the universal female.

Kuan-Yin is unique among the heavenly hierarchy in that she is so utterly free from pride or vengefulness that she remains reluctant to punish even those who deserve a severe lesson.

Kuan-Yin is the one who regards, looks on, or hears the sounds of the world. She is an enlightened being who embodies the attributes of an all pervasive, all consuming, unwavering loving compassion and makes herself available to everyone.

J = Angels And Goddesses

Jaluha hands the cup of oblivion to the souls of sinners. After they drink from the cup of oblivion (I’ll have a sip of that.) they will forget the sinful deeds they performed on earth.

To the sinners who are being judged or purged Jaluha tells them that they ‘may drink therein and forget all the places which their soul has passed through.’



















Jurate is the Lithuanian Goddess of the Sea. Jurate lived in a beautiful castle made out of amber at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. Jurate cared for and ruled over every creature of the sea and every drop of the water. Even the tiniest worm or smallest fish could not be happier.

One day she learned that a fisherman, Kastytis, was catching her fish and taking them out of the sea. She went to his boat prepared to yell at him, but he was so handsome that she fell in love with him instead.

Falling in love with Kastytis, Jurate needed to see her young fisherman everyday.

Perkunas, the God of Thunder, found out about her love for a mere mortal and flew into a jealous rage. He sent a thunderbolt to shatter Jurate’s castle and had Kastytis chained to a rock at the bottom of the sea, where he drowned.

To this day, when there is thunder over the Baltic Sea and the winds are whipped up by raging storms, you can still hear Kastytis’ cries. When walking along the shore after a storm you may find pieces of Jurate’s broken amber castle in the sand, so look closely.

I = Angels And Goddesses

Israfel in Arabic folklore is the angel of resurrection and song. He is described as four-winged and ‘while his feet are under the 7th earth, his head reaches to the pillars of the divine throne.’

Israfel is said to look three times a day and three times during the night down into Hell and is so convulsed with grief that his tears would inundate the earth if Allah did not stop their flow.

It is said that for three years he served as a companion to Mohammed, whom he initiated in the work of a prophet, and then Gabriel came and took over and dictated the Koran to Mohammed.

Another tradition in Islam speaks of Israfel, Gabriel, Michael and Azrael being sent by Allah to the four corners of the earth to fetch seven handfuls of dust for the creation of Adam. On this mission only Azarel (the angel of death) was successful.

It is stated that Israfel is one of the four angels to be destroyed in the end of the world in which the Koran speaks will occur at the sounding of the third and final blast. There is a strong feeling that God will revive them though.

Israfel is also the angel of music and inspires people to sing, play musical instruments, and to compose music. He also encourages renewal, resurrection and regeneration. Angels speak from the mind and sing from the heart, not as we do through vocal cords.

However it is important to note that the Koran does not mention Israfel by name and so it would be incorrect to identify him as a Koranic angel.
















Ixchel is the Mayan Goddess of the moon, water, healing, childbirth, and weaving. Her name means ‘Lady Rainbow.’

The sun was Ixchel’s lover but became jealous of the morning star, who was his brother, accusing the morning star and Ixchel of being lovers. The sun was so jealous that he threw Ixchel out of the heavens and she had to take refuge with the vulture divinity.

The sun followed Ixchel and lured her back home once more, only to become jealous again. Ixchel, tired of the sun’s actions, left him and wandered through the heavens as she wished; becoming invisible if the sun came near her.

Ixchel is most commonly shown as the Old Moon Goddess (called the midwife of creation); in her main form as Mother Goddess and Weaver (who set the Universe in motion); and as the Young Moon Goddess shown with her totem animal the rabbit (the rabbit is a scribe who keeps the lunar calendar).

H = Angels And Goddesses

Harahel is the radiant angel who protects libraries, archives, schools and universities. Harahel opens our minds and hearts to new ideas while inspiring us to use our knowledge in life-affirming ways.

Harahel is a guiding spirit who teaches us that knowledge is useless without wisdom. Harahel encourages true wisdom and through that wisdom we are to generate kindness and love. Harahel is an intellectual who is always busy in the great library of Heaven.




















Hygieia is the Greek Goddess of health and cleanliness. She is the daughter of Asclepius who is the God of medicine and healing and was a companion of the Goddess Aprhodite. Her sisters were Panakeia (All-Cure) and Iaso (Remedy).

Hygieia is usually shown holding a snake which drinks from a cup that she also holds. The snake is depicted as a symbol of healing and rejuvenation in this case, as the snake sheds its skin, so too can the human body shed disease only to survive it.

Hygieia is the source of the word ‘hygiene.’ Although she is the goddess of physical health she is also a protectress of mental health.

Hygieia became extremely important after the sufferings of the plague had directed special attention to sanitary matters.

G = Angels And Goddesses

Gabriel is the most magnificent angel of them all and I actually think I am kind of an angel because Gabriel is my middle name (Gabrielle).

Gabriel is an archangel whose name has a few different meanings such as ‘hero of God or God is my strength.’ In both Mohammedan and Judaeo-Christian lore he is one of the two highest ranking angels with Michael being the other. Gabriel is the only angel besides Michael mentioned by name in the Old Testament.

Gabriel presides over Paradise and is the ruling prince of the 1st Heaven. He is said to sit on the left-hand side of God. Mohammed claimed that it was Gabriel who dictated the Koran to him. To Moslems world-wide Gabriel is the angel of truth.

According to testimony at the court trial of Joan of Arc, it was Gabriel that she claimed inspired her to fight.

Gabriel is perhaps best known for telling Mary that she was with child (Jesus). Gabriel is seen as a primary messenger of God bringing divine announcements and revelations to humankind; acting as an intermediary between heaven and earth. Gabriel is one of the most beloved of all members of the heavenly host.

Gabriel has been called the angel of the power of God, as well as the angel of judgment. In the role of judgment angel he will appear on the last day and blow the final trumpet that will call all of the living and the dead to come forth and face the final, irrevocable judgment of the Lord.

Gabriel is the angel who selects souls from heaven to be birthed into the material world and spends the nine months informing the new person of what they will need to know on earth. Gabriel silences the child before birth by pressing his finger on the child’s lips, thus producing the cleft below a person’s nose.




















Gnowee is the Goddess of the Sun (Wotjabaluk) and is a Goddess of the aboriginal people of southeast Australia.

Gnowee lived on the earth at a time when the sky was dark and people used torches to see their way. One day while Gnowee was gathering yams, her baby son wandered away. Distraught, Gnowee went looking for him with a huge torch. She is still looking everyday, climbing the sky in search of her baby boy.

Legend states that when Gnowee finds her son, her torch will be extinguished and the world will be thrown back into darkness once again.

F = Angels And Goddesses

Fallen angels are the collective name given to those angels who chose to rebel against God and so ‘fell’ from the ranks of the heavenly host.

The fallen angels are known as devils, demons, and unclean spirits and are known to reside in hell or the bottomless pit.

The fallen are unredeemable enemies of God and all of his Creation, especially humanity. The fallen angels struggle daily against all that is holy, sacred, and good. They seek to corrupt and destroy the innocent. They want to plunge the universe into chaos and one of their main goals is to snuff out the perfect light of God’s love.

The most common story of how they fell is that God informed the angels that he intended to create humanity and that the angels should bow down before this new species. Some of the angels refused to obey God, one in particular ‘Satan.’ His pride would not permit him to submit to God. Satan along with one-third of the entire heavenly army launched war against God.

Losing this war the fallen angels were driven from heaven by Michael and the angels of light.




















Flower Woman is the Yaqui Goddess of prophecy.

Yaqui myth tells of the time just before the Spaniards came to North America when a tribe called the Surem lived in the Sonoran desert. One day a tree began to shake and make strange noises and no one could understand what message the tree was trying to tell them.

A young woman came forward and told the people that the tree told her that the world was about to change, that a new people would come and bring new beliefs and new ways. Many of the people did not like Flower Woman’s message and chose to leave the tribe to live underground rather than have new ways imposed upon them. The rest of the people stayed and merged with the newcomers (the Spaniards) and became the Yaqui people.

E = Angels And Goddesses

Eloa is a female angel that was born from a tear that Jesus shed.

At the grave of Lazarus, moved by pity for the grief of Mary and Martha, Jesus shed a divine tear. Of this tear of Jesus’ love was born the angel Eloa.

Eloa is the celestial maiden of pure love.




















Epona is one of the ancient Celtic Goddesses of Abundance. She cared for all horses. Epona was the daughter of a mare and a man and was able to assume human or equine form.

Epona whose power extended beyond death escorted souls on their final journey. Because Epona has the power to travel through death she is also known as the Goddess of dreams as many times in a dream people can cross over from life to death unawares.

Epona was the only Celtic Goddess to have her own temple built in the ancient capital city of Rome.

D = Angels And Goddesses

Djin is the helper of the Archangel Gabriel. He is an elemental king and holds the sphere of fire.

In the Koran the Djin (Jinn) are a race of beings created by Allah to serve Him. They are not his children nor are they deities. Djins were created from fire before humans were created from clay. Since the Koran states that Angels were created from fire too, it is safe to assume that Djins and Angels are the same kind of beings.

Like the Angels, there are good and bad Djins. Also like the Angels, Djin have been known to consort with humans to the detriment of both.

Djin are found mostly in Islamic or Arabian mythology. Some believe that Djin were created over 2,000 years before Adam and were possessors of a lofty place in paradise, they were considered equal to angels.

Many other people feel that the Djin (Jinn) are nothing more than the jenie in the lamp.

















Dolya is the Slavic Goddess of luck. Dolya is said to live behind the stove in all homes. When she is happy she appears as a beautiful maiden and bestows good luck on all in the house. When she is unhappy, however, she appears as Nedolya, a withered old woman who brings bad luck to all who live in the house.

Dolya is also known to be present at any home birth. She takes her responsibility of delivering fates to newborns very seriously.

In the tarot deck Dolya and Nedolya are associated with the great mother Goddess Makosh and they assist in the spinning of the threads of life.

C = Angels And Goddesses

Camael is an angel who presides over beauty, joy, happiness, and contentment. Camael is the Chief of the order of powers and is one of the holy Sefiroth. Camael personifies divine justice and is listed as one of the seven truly powerful angels who have the great honour of standing in the very presence of God.

Camael’s name means ‘He who sees God.’

The angel Camael is credited with having authority over a mighty force ‘The Angels of Destruction’ and is honoured as the chief of the ruling princes of the angelic choir.

Camael is also thought to be the angel of the garden of Gethsemane who gave comfort and encouragement to Jesus in the terrible hours prior to his arrest. Some people believe that Camael is the angel of divine love and the gatekeeper of heaven.




















Ceridwen is the Celtic Goddess of wisdom and magic and her name means blessed poetry.

Ceridwen had three children, a beautiful daughter, an ugly but strong son and another extremely ugly son. The youngest and ugliest son had no skills that would compensate for his horrible looks and so Ceridwen in her role of Goddess of Magic decided to brew a potion that would give her son the gifts of poetry and wisdom.

The potion took a year to brew and Ceridwen employed a blind man and a young man to tend the fire, three drops from the potion fell on the young man and he was given the gifts of poetry and wisdom instead of her ugly son.

Ceridwen was so any that she chased the young man down. He tried to turn into a rabbit but she turned into a dog then he turned into a fish and she became an otter, then he turned into a bird and she became a hawk. Finally he turned himself into a grain of corn and she turned herself into a hen and ate him.

Ceridwen soon found that she was pregnant and she knew it was the young man being reborn and that he would remember his previous life. She swore that she would kill him when he was born but the baby was so beautiful that she couldn’t do it. Instead she wrapped him in sealskin and set him out to sea. The baby was rescued by a Celtic prince. He grew up to be one of the greatest bards of Celtic history.

B = Angels And Goddesses

Baraqyal is an angel who belonged to the Grigori which refers to the angels that are the Watchers. The Watchers have been called ‘Those Who Watch’ or ‘Those Who Are Awake’ or ‘The Ones Who Never Sleep.’

Baraqyal descended from heaven to cohabit with mortal women. Baraqyal is listed among the 200 fallen angels and was ranked among the chief of ten. Baraqyal is said to look like a human male but taller. He never slips and is always silent.

Baraqyal is now considered a demon and is able to teach those who summon him the secret arts of astrology.

In Jewish lore it is said that there are good and evil watchers. Baraqyal is now considered an evil watcher and resides in the 3rd Heaven.




















Bagalamukhi is one of the Mahavidyas which are the wisdom Goddesses. She is the Hindu Goddess of truth and deceit. She is also known for power and cruelty.

Bagalamukhi has the power to tell truth from lies and is able to stun liars into silence. With one hand she holds the tongue of a demon and in her other hand she holds a club with which she will silence the demon.

Bagalamukhi is called upon for success in stopping gossip and to undo the effects of black magic or the evil eye.

A = Angels And Goddesses

Ariel is one of the Archangels. Ariel means ‘Lion of God’ and is associated with the air and water. Ariel is the keeper of the sacred wisdom and is the angel of the earth.

Ariel is a protector of animals and is the great angel of new beginnings. Ariel ranks as one of the seven princes who ruled the waters. In the Bible the name Ariel can indicate a man, a city, and an altar. Ariel is considered to be one of the valiant angels as courage; focus, healing and awakening are some of his virtues.

Ariel is called one of the seven ‘Angels of Presence’ or ‘Angels of the Face’. As with many of the Archangels Ariel is considered to be one of the Guardian Angels.




















Amaterasu Omikami is the Japanese Shinto sun Goddess whose name means ‘she who shines in the heavens.’ Amaterasu is the most important Goddess in the Shinto religion as she is said to have invented the cultivation of rice, silkworms and initiated the art of weaving.

Disgusted with her brother because of his violence, Amaterasu enclosed herself in a cave and refused to come out. The other deities gathered outside her self-made isolation and tried to lure her out with a loud celebration. Amaterasu overcome with curiosity emerged from the cave and seeing her radiance reflected in a mirror that had been set up outside the entrance was amazed at her own brilliance reflected back to her which she had never seen before. She decided to return to the world and life was renewed.
